Altherna's political division:

The human populations of the different continents and subcontinents descend from different real-world peoples:
• The population of Nokrofa descends from different European peoples. These include
Albanians (19, 28, 30 – 33), Estonians (5 – 7), Latvians (8 – 11), Lithuanians (12 – 17), Norwegians (1 – 4), Romanians (18, 20 – 26) and Catalan-speaking Spaniards (27, 29, 34 – 36).
• The population of Isifiren descends mostly from Jews. These include both Israeli and members of Jewish minorities of Europe and North America. The local languages descend from
Yiddish (37 – 52, 54), Israeli (55 – 58, 62 – 65) and Ladino (53, 59, 65 – 68). Since the Ladino-speaking colonists were already too inbreed to form a vivid population they choose to have plenty of genetic colonists. The egg and sperm donors for these were Italians and Spaniards. They were raised by either couples were one or both were sterile or same-sex ones. The resulting population descend from about 60% West European Sephardim and 40% genetic colonists. Not that Jews have ever cared, but still.
• The population of Illemura descends from
Punjabi-speaking Pakistanis and Indians.
• The population of Suvalesi descends from different Polynesian peoples. These include
Hawaiians (91, 92, 95), Maori (89, 90, 94, 97), Tahitians (103 – 105) and Tongans (93, 96, 98 – 102).
• The population of Hekeno mostly descends from pygmies (very short peoples native to central Africa). There were also some other Sub-Saharan Africans. However, those were so few they were culturally absorbed by the different Pygmy peoples. These include
Aka (117, 118, 122, 123), Kango (116, 199 – 121), Ngombe (109 – 112, 114, 115) and Ntomba (106 – 108, 113).
• The population of the northernmost part of Ifrabsje (124 – 143) descends from
Javanese.
• The population of most of Ifrabsje descends from different European peoples. These include
Basques (minorities in 205, 206, 218 and 235), Bulgarians (184, 186, 187, 205, 206), Czechs (188 – 195), Breton-speaking French (201 – 203, 216, 217, 234, 247), Hungarians (165, 166, 171 – 175), Irish-speaking Irishmen (151 – 163, 167, 170), Poles (168, 197 – 200, 215, 231 – 233), Gaelic-speaking Scotsmen (235 – 246), Slovaks (207 – 214), Slovenes (164, 183, 185, 204, 218), Romansh-speaking Swiss (219 – 230) and Welsh (169, 176 – 182).
The countries numbered 144 – 150 consists the region of Talsernata. Despite its climate being relatively friendly to food production is only sparsely populated. There is a long story behind this. Neither the Southeast Asian nor the European colonists liked the local climate. Most Hungarians and Slovenes thought the summers too hot while most Javanese found the winters too cold. Consequentially, the area was very sparsely populated during the
First Empire.
After the fall of the First Empire the inhabitants of Altherna used what resources they had to create the separate human species
turin. (Crossbreeds between turin and humans are sterile.) As the name suggests these were made to resemble standard fantasy dwarves. The idea was to provide manpower to rebuild Altherna's economy after its collapse. But by the time turin existed in sufficient numbers to impact economy the knowledge of how to rebuild was lost. Instead turin became enslaved by humans. 90% of the population of Talsernata came to consist of such slaves.
When the
Federation of Althea found this planet it became possible for turin to escape their slave-owners. More than 80% of them did exactly that during the course of 30 years. As a direct result Talsernata became largely depopulated. The seven surviving towns cut up the region between them resulting in the seven countries on this map.
